Very good presentation on new features in XenApp 6.5. More information on XenApp 6.5 can be found in Citrix eDocs - best resource of information. The session was recorded in London, UK on November 18, 2011 at E2EVC 2011 London event. Sorry about the low video quality - well if you visit the event you can see it yourself in HD. Either way I recommend that you use the Presentation Slides (in case you are on the YouTube the slides are available at e2evc.com) while watching the Video, so that you can hear AND see what the guys are talking about.

RT @rspruijt A #Windows Phone 7 #WP7 is a nice #Microsoft #MVP award gift >just got mine!

Couple of days ago my fellow MVP friend and Virtualization Guru Ruben Spruijt (who is also Citrix CTP and vExpert) posted a tweet

@rspruijt A #Windows Phone 7 #WP7 is a nice #Microsoft #MVP award gift! ...

He’s too positive, I thought, being very suspicious myself. I mean there have been many people moaning about the fact that MVP’s don’t get the 100$ MS Bux for their Store to buy software anymore, some again complained that when they go to MVP Summit they have to share a room with someone else or else pay 50% of the room themselves (cmon! Don’t you remember how much fun it was when you were in University?), but I just think that those people don’t realise that we are all ON A MISSION! – on a mission to make the planet greener and it has nothing to do with anything else! And so I always embraced the changes ever since I have been an MVP in 2006! In my first year there was that MVP bag, the 100$ MS Bux voucher that pushed people (against their will I learned) to order something from Microsoft Store and thus creating a massive carbon footprint by the packages being delivered from over the pound! Then everyone had they own room in the Hotel while at MVP Summit and I tell you this – the hotel rooms we get there could easily accommodate 5 people per room.. ! What a waste!

So I thought – enough is enough! If Microsoft will be really sending WM7 to us (just like they give a WM7 phone to their employees) I will send it back! I want to be green!

Now the FedEx courier arrived this morning, bringing the MVP Award package. I looked at the package – 0.9 Kilo. I thought hmm let’s see what’s inside?!

So it was the certificate, the MVP Card, and an Award Disc (with 2011 figure on it) which you can add to your MVP Obelisk (there were no Obelisks before 2009, I think).

So? No WM7 Phone? Disappointing isn’t it? Let’s take a closer look

Ok let’s see. I open up the cartons and something what appears to be a Tablet is inside. Hmm how do I turn this thing on?

Alright! Remember Apples iPad? This one has the same button (in fact I believe this device isn’t just WM7 Mobile it is WM 7 TABLET!)

Viola! A fully functional WM7 Tablet – and just half of the weight of the iPad – and fully disposable too! So.. I’m all green – I will keep it!

Update: I just got a hint that I can use the box from first picture as a cradle!

Thanks Ruben for being so positive!

Being MVP’s we all understand, that it is not about the greed or material benefits from the MVP program – it’s about the appreciation of the community, about sharing our knowledge and .. yes, ok, something about little nice things Microsoft make come down our way! Like a full MSDN and TechNet subscription (love it!)! I’m proud and delighted to be an MVP for 2011 again! Microsoft Remote Desktop Services rock!

Un-jailbreaking & restoring your iPad – the manual way.

All this was made on an iPad 16GB 3G (should not make a difference actually) and a Windows PC!

If you are one of those who have a jailbroken iPad for whatever reason and you want to upgrade to 4.2.1 version, an update which bring a lot of features, you may have faced the same problem like I did.

I plugged in my iPad into the computer clicked the Restore button in iTunes - everything runs fine and yet at some stage I got the error:

“There was a problem downloading the software for the iPad. The requested resource was not found.”

First I thought there was a problem with my internet connection, then I thought it happened to me because I just upgraded iTunes to 10.1.1.4, then I have tried couple of more times hours later, because I heard that sometimes Apple Servers are overloaded – no joy. I started to think that the reason might be the fact that the device was jailbroken. But after Googling the issue I realised that a lot of people actually had the same problem. It is just that resolution for different people seems to be different.

Some of the websites suggest to:

1) Bring your iPad into the recovery mode by Holding the Home + Sleep/Power button (don't stop holding when it asks you if you want to switch off your device) and then, when the device starts to restart, you continue to hold the Home button while with your other hand you plug in the cable into your iPad (which you previously plugged into the computer). Do that before the Apple Logo appear! Then, when the logo comes you will be notified by iTunes that your iPad is now in "Recovery mode". Yet still, I wans't able to to download the Update. I got the same error :(

Nr. 1 did not work for me!

2) In another example people suggest to

a) Download the IPSW file – just look up for 4.2.1 ipsw file on Google. When I found the file and tried to download the file in my Internet Explorer 8 even though the link is read with a IPSW file extension – IE wants to save it with ZIP extension! So first I downloaded the file and could not understand where the IPSW file was, because when I extracted the file there was no such file. What you have to do is after you download the 600+ MB file is to RENAME the file to .IPSW extension!
b) Now when you have your IPSW file, open iTunes, plugin your iPad, hold the SHIFT key (Option key for Macintosh) and then press the RESTORE button in your iTunes. After you do so a file menu opens up in which you can choose the location of your IPSW file.
c) After you locate and choose the ipsw file you will go through menu of accepting the T &C for the update and in about 10 – 20 min the update is done!

d) Now you can restore the backup date back to your iPad. Your iPad is now unjailbroken and everything except the Cydia Apps is back.
e) Since there is no Jailbreak for 4.2.1 out yet, which does not require you to jailbreak the iPad every time after you reset your device (which I learned might be soo inconvenient when you are on travel with just your iPad) I will rather enjoy the benefits of 4.2.1 which are more important for me at the moment than Cydia Apps.

Nr. 2 worked perfectly! No I have 4.2.1!

Microsoft MSDN, Technet and Terminal Services CAL's / RDS CAL

------------- MSDN --------------------------

If you are one of the lucky owners of Microsoft MSDN subscribtion and you are working on something which imply testing Terminal Services application mode you might wonder whether or not you can get TS CAL's as part of your MSDN subscribtion. Indeed you can, just follow this simple guidline:

1) Install Windows 2008 or R2 or 2003 or even 2000 (with MSDN key to avoid death after 180 Days)
2) Activate W2008 (you will have to do that once in awhile since MSDN keys need to be reactivated once in a while)
3) Install Roles, TS inclusive
4) Call Microsoft Clearance house (a.k.a when you are in License Server - add TS CAL - activate by Phone - call Clearance house)
5) State your MSDN subscribtion number and what ever information they will ask
6) Request the type of TS CAL you need (W2000, 2003 or 2008)
7) enter the code stated by MS employee

Thats it. So as a valid MSDN subscriber you can call MS Clearance house and request TS CAL for developer purposes and only for them. According to the License agreement you are not allowed to use it in production.

Terminal Services Licensing for MSDN, Microsoft Certified Partner and MSCTEC
Qualified members of the MSDN, Microsoft Certified Partner, and MSCTEC programs may only use the Telephone connection method to install client licenses. You will need to provide your customer identification number (e.g., MSDN Subscriber ID, Microsoft Certified Partner ID) for your program when installing licenses. Client licenses obtained through these programs are bound by the terms of the program's End User License Agreement (EULA).

------------- TechNet Plus --------------------------

If you are a Technet Plus subscriber thats a different story. TS Cal is NOT INCLUDED in TechNet Plus Subscribtion. But you can still use 120 days evalution where you don't need to install the License Server, and after you do you have 90 days to activate it. So plently of time for testing.
